To pass thru the stones, a sacrificial gem stone must be used. It gets burned up. If no stone, then a blood sacrifice is needed (Geilis method). The ring was the remains of the gem used she used. Why she passed thru the first time without a stone? Don't remember!

I don't remember any gem/stone when Claire passed through the stones the first time. It seems she just touched them, and she was gone.

I rewatched Season 1 first 3 episides, all Claire did was touch the stone.Though I do recall on Seasons 2 episode 1, Claire looked for a stone which seemed to have fallen out coming back to 1948.

1. No. It is possible (though dangerous) to travel without gems. If gems are used, yes, they do burn up.

2. No. (Geillis is a lunatic.)

3. DG has not specifically stated, but there are theories as to why Claire traveled as she did. It will probably be revealed eventually.

The first time it was a Fire Feast, when she returned it was not. Therefore a gem was needed.
