This week marks a momentous, annual occasion in my household. One where schedules are compared, brackets are printed, food and drinks are flowing and I giddily count down the hours until I see my favorite team walk out for the kick off. That’s right – it’s the start of the 2016 TV and film awards season!
What? You thought I was talking NFL football? Pssh, people – as a TV fanatic, these are my playoffs. And this year is an especially awesome one because our collective favorite team is contending for the title. So, just what does the lineup look like for our Outlander stars in this busy awards show week?
First up on the “playoffs” schedule is tonight’s 42nd People’s Choice Awards, broadcast live on CBS at 9:00 pm EST. Remember how we speculated that awards shows are often popularity contests that can sometimes too closely resemble a nauseating plot point out of Mean Girls?
Well good news, friends – this awards show is an actual popularity contest in the best way possible – one voted on by FANS! Since we know that Outlander has the most adoring, click-happy fans to ever grace a TV show universe, let’s just go ahead and lock up our beloved show, Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan for a hat trick win – as in three, like in soccer (see, I can go sports if you need me to).
Below is a listing of the categories and contenders where Outlander is nominated. It’s amusing that the nominees in the actor and actress categories aren’t even attributed to shows or characters. Nope, just the name… hence solidifying our theory that the power of popularity shall prevail here.
Just for kicks, we’ve gone ahead and assumed their nominations are for the shows we list below (looking at you, David Tennant). I’d love to tell you they are listed in no particular order with a complete nod to impartiality, but that’d be a lie.

UPDATE: Outlander brought home two awards Wednesday evening – one for the show and one for Caitriona Balfe! Our favorite stars were not in attendance, but fear not, we’ll see them later this week for…
This week’s playoff schedule will conclude with Sunday night’s live telecast of the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, which kicks off at 8:00 pm EST on NBC. Not interested in watching the entire three-hour broadcast? Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! I’ll be live blogging the event for the Outlander Cast team to bring you every Outlanderesque detail.
Best Television Series – Drama:
“Outlander” (Starz)
”Empire” (ABC)
“Game of Thrones” (HBO)
“Mr. Robot” (USA)
”Narcos” (Netflix)
Let me confess, I’ve reserved all my fangirl squeal for this night for a few reasons:
- We will get to see our Outlander family at the ball – all dolled up in modern glam and in front of millions of potential new fans and industry influencers. Our little sleeper show that could is about to get its day in the sun – win or no win, though a win is preferred!
(Side note: be sure to read Anne Gavin’s fantastic post where she plays stylist for the day and ponders what gorgeous leading lady Caitriona Balfe might wear)
- If I read one more credible prediction that Outlander will take home the top prize, my head might blow off with excitement and confetti shall rain out. This one from reputed TV critic Michael Ausiello came this close to achieving that outcome. And I quote, “Yep, sources close to my gut tell me exclusively that the crazy, unpredictable Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. will hand Outlander the top drama prize…” Legit – Rain. Confetti.
- The love of Outlander beat out NFL Playoffs in our house, and thus I’ll be commandeering our TV to watching nothing but the Golden Globes on Sunday night. Take that, football!
- Okay FINE, that’s not entirely true – but let’s just say I have blackmailed begged asked to take over a friend’s living room and TV so that I can live blog all things “Outlander Goes to Hollywood” for you. Please go here for all the details!
Will you watch along with us on Sunday?
