*SPOILER ALERT*
THE WAIT IS NEARLY OVER LADIES AND GENTS! The release date for Outlander season 2 has finally been announced in exclusive stories for EW and PEOPLE by STARZ. The magic date? April 9, 2016. And while I’m happy we have the date – can we just talk about the BOMB Ron Moore and co. decided to drop on us with the corresponding new trailer that was just released? Hit the jump for the full trailer and more on the big moment we have seen…
First and foremost – if you want to go in to Outlander season two with ZERO spoilers, then DO NOT watch this trailer. Trust me. If you don’t care – then get ready for some heavy stuff. Analysis to follow the trailer.
Alright – let’s get down to brass tax here – CLAIRE GOES BACK!?!?! There are an INFINITE amount of questions that come as a result of this hydrogen bomb that Ron Moore has dropped on us.
Why is she back? What happens? Did she choose to go back? Does she only have a certain amount of time allowed in 1743? Did fate and time course correct and kick her out of the 18th century? Or, conversely, did she succeed in changing time? When in the story line does it happen? How long of a time period in the 20th century pass? Does she have the baby in the 18th century? Or does the baby come out in the 20th? Seriously — the questions are endless. And, of course, as always, I trust Ron Moore to give us a perfectly reasonable answer.
BUT – I will call out the reasoning behind giving us this MASSIVE FREAKING SPOILER in the trailer.
Seriously. What in the right f*$% is the final scene doing in there? It almost reminds me of the awful trailer for
Terminator Genisys that revealed John Connor as a terminator. You can’t take a twist like John Connor, or Claire going back to Frank and just spoil it right off Jump Street.
I say that because it takes everything we saw in the trailer (stuff with Murtaugh, Jamie, France, Claire’s burden,) and minimizes that struggle in comparison to the immediate reaction of, “HOLY EFF CLAIRE? PLANES?! FRANK?!?!WHAT?!?!?!?!?”
Of course, someone will suggest to me that Claire going back to Frank is inferred when Jamie says, “promise you will always find a way back to me.” Right. I get it.
But, let’s infer it. Keep the quick shots of Frank, the shot of the planes flying in the sky, maybe even the quick shot of Claire coming down the stairs in modern clothing. All great. But, let the viewer discover that bomb WITHIN the story – not in the trailer.
Which makes me also think that it must happen early in the story. Notice, she is not pregnant so it has to happen fairly early on. AND, again, we do have the promise that she made to Jamie. Perhaps the main thrust of the season will be, how the heck Claire returns to Jamie? Additionally, knowing Ron Moore’s work – he’s not going to show his cards this early either.
So, all this being said, it’s an interesting twist (one that I predicted on the podcast btw thank you very much) and I am hooked for season two. The trailer is darker, grittier, and bleak than
the teaser, and it shows the actual toll the time changing mission is taking on Claire and Jamie – but most specifically, Claire. Which, the teaser lacked. Seeing Claire ripping apart at the seams is where the story should naturally progress and, to be honest, is the most provocative situation in which we have found her character yet.
(By the way – I LOVE the song in the trailer. After some searching, it’s DEAR GOD by Lawless feat. Sydney Wayser. You can purchase that song on amazon here.)
I think this gives us our clearest look into season two yet, and while I enjoyed
season one for what it was, I am happy that we are finally going to see our dynamic duo of Claire and Jamie actually STRUGGLE. Not necessarily with outer forces (because who could forget Wentworth?) but I mean, struggle with each other.
This season will test their relationship, and force them to ask whether or not they’ve actually EARNED each other. And to be honest, if we the viewers have earned them too. It’s nice to love Jamie and Claire thru things like the Search, The Wedding etc. – but what happens when things are not well between the two?
Oh, Ron Moore – you’re an expert. And, I love you. Take me where you will.
STAY TUNED TO THE OUTLANDER CAST BLOG AS WE WILL BE BREAKING DOWN EACH IMAGE FROM THE TRAILER SOON!
