Oh gosh, where to start with this one…I think I’m going to give it a 4.887 Kilt Rating, I really enjoyed the whole episode, though it did have a few little wonks, which is fine, they do the best they can. The themes of having your home taken away, building a home, and starting anew are particularly poignant for me, and I really loved seeing the Cherokee done right. I appreciate the effort put in by the Production to keep it accurate, and listen to the people they were portraying. Well done. Yes, I agree their anglicized accents were a bit shocking, but I choose to whistle right past it. I’m not gonna nitpick them, they might have learned English as kids, who knows? Only a couple of them speak it, so I’m just going to head-cannon that they learned it young. On to the GBG.
My Good would have to be Fiona!! Sly little devil, she knows what’s up!! I love how Roger just goes with the incredulous wide eyed innocent “What what now?” look, while trying to cover his butt. Nice try Roger, she’s got your number…
My bad was the bear fight, not the fact that they changed it, it just seemed a bit…contrived? I don’t really know how to put my finger in it, it just made me go, “huh, so this is how we’re doing it…ok.” I didn’t buy into the action of the fight itself, but the change to a man in Bear Furry gear didn’t bother me, I thought it was thematically appropriate.
My GREAT is the end, when Roger learns out of the blue that Bree has gone to Scotland, “to see her mother”…Oh Snap!! The subtle change on his face, the music, it’s fantastic, and my heart started beating faster in my chest…I love the Reveal, it caught me by surprise. I thought we’d get a little shot of her packing, or some clue, but no!! She’s ghosted us!! I love it!! Love it love it love it… I can’t wait for 405, it’s gonna be wicked epic!!!

Hi Mary and Blake!
Long time podcast listener, first time commenting. I wasn’t sure if this was already called out, but after watching episode 4, I remembered in episode 3 at about the 16:12 mark (on the Roku Starz app), the scene transitioned from Roger and Brianna driving to Jamie, Claire, Wee Ian and John Quincy Meyer traveling on what looked like the very same path, based on the mountain in the background. At first, it just seemed like a neat editing trick, but after seeing in episode 4 where Roger confirms that Fraser’s Ridge was located at the same place as the Scottish festival they attended, I wonder if there is something more significant about this detail? After watching shows like Outlander and Game of Thrones, I know small details like that are often included intentionally as a type of foreshadowing for the viewers. So, maybe there’s something more there, or maybe I spend too much time looking for clues…either way, I thought it was interesting.

Hi Mary and Blake:

I have to say I loved seeing the Claire/Marsali exchange. To me, their dynamic is so very authentic. Of course their relationship is strained because of Leghaire, but it is also cordial.

I enjoy seeing Lauren Lyle in the role (I think she could pass for Nell Hudson’s sister). Of course Marsali is missing her mom, wanting her council and advice, especially being pregnant. (I understand, I lost my mom a few short months ago myself)

Claire was so sweet with her, she had every right to bash Leghaire to Marsali, to have her view colored by her past with her, but she didn’t say any of that to Marsali. She was kind, offering advice: woman to woman.

Claire also even made the effort to see the good in Leghaire as a mom to Marsali.

Really, the only thing we know about Leghaire is that she has this deep obsession for Jamie (she’s hardly the only one…Black Jack, the Duke of Sandriam….John Grey…Geneva..and on and on). So, it’s nice to think that Leghaire loved her daughters.

Speaking of which, speak of the devil and he appears—Perhaps there might be a Leghaire sighting soon?

Nell Hudson is so good in the role, I can’t stand the character.

Oh Jamie and Claire–Was I the only one hoping for a wild sex scene against that tree?

I agree with you, I also want to see Murtah. It’s way past time, I also want a Frank flashback through Bree’s eyes, and so much more.

Please let us have more character- driven episodes: We are a few episodes in Outlander, and not too many more left!

Hi Mary and Blake,

I wanted to address why the Cherokee were doing the bear dance ceremony while Jamie was fighting the man-bear. When they banished him from the tribe he was dead to them, invisible, so they could not kill what they felt was already dead. So they were trying to get rid of him on the spirit level. If you read the script there is a translation of what is being said and there are notations from Toni Graphia as well and an explanation on the podcast with Maril Davis and Toni.

The Cherokee spoke English because of fighting with the Brits in the French-Indian wars along with trading with the settlers.

Enjoyed this one episode (both podcast AND the show).

That’s funny you two saw it that way, the Native American’s dancing around the fire during the fight between Jamie and “man-bear,” I actually took it as them trying to give Jamie strength to kill the man-bear. I want sure what to do with it the first time I saw the episode, but the second time, it really did, to me, seem like the “Dances With Wolves” lady was trying to give Jamie strength.

SO GOOD on what you both said on all the tension scenes in this episode…It really was a great episode.

And Mary, “FR” = Frank Randall??? What did you do to me!!!??? I WILL NEVER be able to un-see that. ha ha ha ha ha ..Thanks. 🙁 (: :|(:

Such a good season. Can’t wait to listen to “Savages” next. (:
