Want to see behind-the-scenes filming for Outlander Episode 408, “Wilmington?” Our blogger was there and has first photos of the cast in and around Glasgow.
Outlander Season 4 Episode 408 was shot largely at interior studio sets. Fergus and Marsali’s home (awww, baby Germain), the inn, the marriage bed (hmmm!). The outdoor Wilmington scenes were shot at the now familiar town set that Outlander wizard Jon Gary Steele and his crew purpose built in an old quarry near the studio. At that location it is not possible to get anywhere near to see the filming.
So, for this episode I can bring you the sights and sounds of filming that took place in Glasgow city, earlier this year in March. Social media channels alerted us that filming would take place in Glasgow over two days and, yes, I spotted this on my reconnoitre. Advance warnings of street closures and traffic diversions. The location was the beautiful St. Andrews in the Square.
On the first day I met up with super photographer Gary Dempster and we were committed to stay the distance. It was actually bitterly cold, the temp only got up to 7 degrees C and there was a wind tunnel effect on that street and the ground underfoot was like ice. Nevertheless, we persisted.
The crew and supporting actors/extras began to arrive on the scene first. So many people involved.
We even got our own pics in the local paper! And there may have been a wee interview with Glasgow Live!

We could see at the outset that it was an indoor shoot, so there would be not much to be seen other than comings and goings of the stars and the extras. This was Gary’s opportunity to take pictures of the amazing details that are part of the extras’ appearance. They were covered up in blue cloaks (for secrecy, or warmth? Maybe both?) so we couldn’t see their clothing but we could see the fabulous hairstyles and some pretty wild headgear!
We wondered at this one! But now we know that he was one of the stage players.
When Sam Heughan arrived we could see that he was wearing his familiar Parisian outfit. Don’t you marvel that so many of their clothes survived a shipwreck?!
The action was all indoors and all day we could hear the familiar calls of “quiet please!,” “rolling!” and “cut!” Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe were generous with fans as usual, and came over to chat, take selfies and sign autographs, when they were heading off for their lunch break (at 3.45pm!).
When darkness set in we decided not to hang about as we knew there was an early start tomorrow. Filming that day finished at 10.30 p.m. Such long days.
Believe it or not, the weather was worse the second day! Not only was it cold and windy but a steady light rain had been added to the mix! So, out with the hiking gear, specifically the waterproof pants were added to my intrepid reporter wardrobe for the day. And I was all set with umbrella to hold over Gary’s camera if needed.
Sam and Caitriona arrived on set at about 11 a.m. and dashed in through the rain. This becomes the time for chatting and making connections with other spectators and fans. We made one particularly happy connection with a couple from England, Bryan and Linda. Gary and I had already met them at Dunure Harbour (#DownTheRabbitHole) and it was nice to catch up with them again.

Linda was determined to get a picture with Sam as they would be returning to England and likely never have the opportunity again. Her dream came true, and I sneaked this video in without her knowing.
When Sam and Caitriona came out at the end of their day there was more fan interaction. What a pair of generous good-humoured folk they are. And the fans certainly enjoyed it.

I went to St. Andrews a few days later (it’s open to the public and certainly worth a visit) and had a look at the interior. A very grand building indeed.
Flashback to #DownThe RabbitHole. I hadn’t realised last week that the preparations I saw at St. Andrews during the night time, was the set-up for the scene with Frank and Brianna in the car, with Frank telling her of the impending divorce. They started bringing the cars in during the day, and at night the area was well lit for the action. No sign of Sophie Skelton or Tobias Menzies while I was there though. They must’ve worked very late that night.
Again, this episode has many unexpected plot twists and turns. Next week we’re hoping for another big reunion, right? This is certainly the season of reunions! Hopefully I will have some more good stuff for you when we see the next episode, “The Birds and The Bees.” Sounds intriguing, no?
