Dear Mary & Blake,
As much as I love Jamie as a character, this version of him as portrayed in both the book and series has always been my least favorite. Everyone keeps taking the side against Roger, but I am absolutely on his side against Jamie. I especially don’t like Jamie’s lack of identification with Roger. If you’ll recall, Jamie was framed for a murder by Black Jack Randall. A soldier was shot during Jamie’s escape from Fort William, and he had a price on his head for more than four years, because of it. And to top it all off, Randall himself shot the man. Why? Because not all of the soldiers would keep quiet about his crimes. He was killing off a witness and framing Jamie simultaneously. Roger was accused of and punished for the rape, that he didn’t commit. So why can’t Jamie feel bad about that? He feels bad for taking him away from Bree, but he doesn’t feel terrible about what Roger went through this past year. At least not enough. And I hate that Jamie can’t be more understanding about the rape itself. He derides Roger for not being there at the moment it happened. But if he had been there, what could Roger have done? Those men who looked the other way, while it was happening, would also have held Roger back if he’d tried to interfere. They might even have killed him for trying. I know Brianna’s rape was a horrible thing, but if Roger had been killed for trying to protect her that same night, it would have been truly horrific. In Season One, Jamie and Claire were come upon by a couple of former Redcoats. One held a gun to his head, while the other tried to rape Claire. Jamie was unable to stop it, until Claire took action. It was two against two, and still action was delayed. So tell me how an untrained historian who has no gun and no sword could stop the rape when there were at least ten men in that room enabling it? True, Jamie doesn’t know all those details, but he does know what it feels like watch the woman you love get assaulted. Brianna obviously doesn’t blame Roger for her rape. Her plan was originally to come to that time without Roger, and risked getting raped. Roger spent months trying to catch up to her, so that he could protect her, so why should he be blamed for leaving Brianna for the night when she told him she’d be fine without him? I know that Roger knowing Stephen Bonnet ahead of time does change things a little. Roger did know that he was in town and that he was dangerous. But he didn’t know him to be a rapist. Roger did leave their room that night which means he expected Bree to stay there, not go back to the inn where Bonnet was. And it was the middle of the night, so he didn’t expect the two would cross paths anyway. Roger knew that her father was somewhat nearby, so he assumed that she’d get there safe and sound. And again, he couldn’t have prevented it, had he been there. He would have tried and failed and probably died. That’s why Brianna left him behind in the 20th century. She knew he might get himself killed trying to protect her. So she’s actually glad he wasn’t there. Unfortunately, Jamie thinks otherwise. But once he gets to know Roger, he’ll be happy to have him in the family. Right now he blames Roger for letting to rape occur and for the loss of Ian. But Ian’s loss is not his fault either. Roger didn’t object to the trade, because he was worried the Mohawk were going to kill him for help the priest died quickly. He knew that Ian at least had a chance. Let’s face it; the thing that Roger is guilty of is bad timing. Showing up at the wrong moments and not showing up at the right moments. Jamie’s crimes include attempted murder, lies and hypocrisy. So I’m much more angry at Jamie than I ever could be at Roger. Hopefully we’ll see some forgiveness and bonding between the two within an episode or two of Season Five.

The writers of this story have created a new character in this season called “Jamie Dumb Fraser.” He goes from becoming wise and just, to an imbecile when he punches out Roger. What kind of dumb man would nearly kill a man without trying him for what he is accused of? That is not the wise and just Jamie they’ve portrayed throughout this show. It shows an inconsistency of the writers by creating an unlikely mistake for their character that is no longer the same character that the viewer learns to love. Ruined the whole franchise in this episode. Terrible.
