Hey guys. I sent an email, but not if you got it because I’ve been having some problems with my email server. So, this is a repeat of what I emailed.

As a book reader, I had to watch the episode four times to come up with a final kilt rating that was as non-biased as possible. My final kilt rating is 4.9. Even on my first viewing, I was very pleased! I actually liked most of the changes from the book. And, of course, I loved how much of the beautiful dialogue from “Voyager” was used in the episode. Like you Mary, I was initially bothered by the apparent time jump, so I looked it up. Sunset on December 26th in Edinburgh is around 3:40pm. So, maybe it took time to walk to the tavern (Jaime did say he was late.) Maybe they grabbed some lunch and then went back to the print shop to settle some business and talk to Geordie (he did say he was going to do that!). All that could have killed a couple of hours.

My GOOD – Seeing adult Fergus and Young Ian! They were both simply perfect. And, the reunion between Claire and Fergus was heartwarming. I loved Geordie – he was hilarious. I liked that Jaime told Claire about Willy. It bothered me that he didn’t tell Claire early on in the book. I liked Gary Young’s portrayal of Mr. Willoughby – so glad he wasn’t the stereotype he was in the book.

BAD – I wasn’t crazy about the ending. I didn’t mind a cliffhanger, but I was bothered by the attempted rape. The books already have more than enough rape scenes, so we don’t need rape scenes that aren’t even in the books. I would also have liked to see Jaime spend more time with Bree’s pictures and asking Claire about her. It just seemed too abrupt and casual. But, I’m giving the show the benefit of the doubt here because I want to see how Bree is handled in future episodes. I’m wondering if this choice was intentional. At this point, Jaime is uncertain about Claire’s motives and feelings. He was clearly overwhelmed with emotions looking at the baby picture. Perhaps he changed the subject quickly to Willy so he WOULDN’T break down. I’m hoping that they dedicate a portion of a future episode to Jaime lingering over the photos and the couple having more conversations about Bree.

GREAT – pretty much everything else! I loved all the awkwardness and uncertainty between Jaime and Claire. I loved all the “face acting” — both Sam and Cait showed such range of emotions with no words. And, I loved how the episode mirrored “The Wedding.”

just discovered this podcast but have been an Outlander fan since the beginning!! Loved this episode,I would give it a 4.2 though. My good was Claire seeing Fergus, mostly because she’s been through an emotional rollercoster with choosing to leave Bree behind and when she sees Fergus I would like to think in some way she finds comfort because he was like a son to her and Jamie.

My bad was how it ended, I’ve listened to the podcast so you guys know what I mean.

My great was of course the whole reunion. I will say I loved the awkwardness but my rating has a lot to do with how much awkwardness there was. I can help but compare the emotions Jamie expressed in this episode to the one where he sends Claire through the stones back to the future. Now I know there was a lot more going through his head in that episode but at least he shed some tears. I felt when he finally sees Claire again, yes he’s shocked, suprised, dumfounded but I feel like I needed some more, I don’t know maybe it’s just me but Claire was amazing, she was on point for every emotion I pictured her feeling. Maybe I had my hopes to high and that’s why but I just thought Jamie was going to have a stronger reaction. Don’t get me wrong though I still loved watching this episode!

Greetings from Charleston! Listening to the podcast…Mary, re: the time jump from sunny afternoon to nite nite time… it is wintertime, in Edinburgh. It gets dark EARLY in the winter that far north, and it wouldn’t be surprising to me that it was dark by the time they got to the brothel. Just a thought. I love the podcast and am going back to listening. 😀

Question: If Jamie did not know what the word fuck meant then how did the bad guy at the end of the episode threaten to “fuck” her. Also why did Jamie say Claire wasn’t missing any meals. A bit out of character and insulting to Claire.

  Hi Dee, It’s one of those times where book dialogue doesn’t quite work in the show as Claire has a voluptuous physique in the book and Jamie is always saying cheeky things like this in appreciation of her figure – as many couples do 🙂 Remember in the 1st season when he was ‘enjoying’ her sitting in front of him on the horse on the ride back to Castle Leoch 🙂 Just cheeky banter of which Claire gives as good as she gets in the book at least.

I give this episode a 4.9 kilt rating.

GOOD ‘ The flow and pacing, the subtle ways they depicted Jamie’s current life without endless exposition, the realistic way they handled the push and pull between Jamie and Claire as they both tried to determine how they fit into one another’s lives after being apart for so long. I agree with the yadda, yadda, yadda. Since they were mirroring the Wedding a but, i think it would have been nice to see one of those snippet montages like they used in The Wedding when they were sharing their history with one another to break the ice.

BAD Like everyone else, I didn’t care for the ending. I wish they would have cut all the rapey talk out and just had him grab her from behind with a hand over her mouth, Claire giving him a swift kick to the shins and crying out and then let that scene play out to its conclusion (which we’ll see next week). The episode could have then ending with a somewhat humorous “Oh snap! Now what do we do?” note which would have lead perfectly into the next episode.

GREAT. I was SO happy and relieved when Jamie revealed Willie! The way it was handled in the book aggravated me to no end! Grown up Fergus and the introduction of one of my favorite characters, young Ian!

One thing I’ve had to do as a book reader is to uncouple the expectation of “I want it NOW” and realize that just because we don’t get something from the book at the exact same moment does not mean we won’t get it at all. Sometimes they have to get from Point A to Point B in an episode and then fill in the detail over the course of the following episodes. Eventually everything all comes together in a very satisfactory manner.

Ya’ll rock I felt that same way..but I truly love the comic relieve I too was laughing with tears running down my face from just a few moments before the were touching my heart. I wasn’t disappointed at all. I will say I have to go forward to the ending, I do not recall the man being in her room..I thought it was at the front door near the stairs. I do not recall a rape scene..I hope it is Mr Wiilowby that comes to the rescue..and no rape happens.

MARK ME ;This show will never make it to the Ridge.I am rapidly losing interest , the writers have been hacking it to bits from the beginning and now we have one of the stars deciding he knows better than the author how Jamie would react. Its true , Power really does corrupt.Now with all this said , I could be wrong,but I’ve been a Neilson Family member for 6 years ……..js

Hi Mary & Blake — long time listener but this is the first time I’ve left feedback here. Sunset in Edinburgh in January is about 3:30pm, so there was no huge time jump in this episode.

In the winter in Edinburgh the sun sets at 3:30 pm as per Matt Roberts.

The question is why were there Ardsmuir men there. They were all indentured in America for 14 years. They shouldn’t be in Scotland.

The speech about the blackmail was in the script, but was cut.

Same mold for the scars. The make-up artist actually made them a bit lighter.

He wouldn’t want attention because he’s writing seditious pamphlets.

I loved A. Malcolm, Sam and Cait did a great job, If I was to change anything, it would’ve been Clair looking down at Jamie from the upstairs, to me that was a distant way of facing each other, even though Jamie fainted and Sam did a great job, it would’ve been monumental if she came down and he would’ve turned and stare at each other for a moment. just like when Murtagh turned and stared at Jamie. That’s what was missing in the Print Shop, it would’ve been more emotional, till now I’m still not crazy about that scene.
