I’m honestly having a hard time figuring out how to start this comment, since there was so much AWESOME going on!!! I think I’ll start with saying I’m doing my Kilt Rating in a special 2-part segment. My first KR is an overall fabulous 4.995. That’s right. All the talk of weird lighting, or predictable dialogue, I DINNA CARE, there was so much good stuff going on, it made up for all the nit picky bits, as far as I’m concerned.
My Good was Willie. This poor kid has been through the ringer, and he earned every pinch-nosed, snarky, spoiled, preteen ounce of angst he musters, and holy cow, does he ever deliver. Oliver(the actor) does a fabulous job of having Willie just barely hanging on to his nobleman’s poker face, and failing to do so more often than he’d care to admit. Poor little guy just needs a break from people he loves dying or abandoning him, somebody give that child a hug and a cocoa!! His bravery and nobility facing the Cherokee warriors, and his honor in not letting Jamie take the fall for his own willful behavior absolutely shrieks of a callback to Lord John when he gives up his own men’s location to protect Claire’s honor, oh gosh!! He’s a good lad under all the pomp and fine fur trappings, I so look forward to seeing him again!!
My Bad is that I literally don’t have time or room enough to write down all my Greats!!! Sorry, I just don’t even care about the fiddly bits, so my GREATS are as follows!!!
*LORD JOHN GREY and Claire going Tête á Tête about Jamie, Willie, Brianna, and just the absolute struggle of LJG to come to terms with himself and his feelings now that his wife has died, I feel his heartache and turmoil…
*Murtagh finding out about Willie, and his subtle devastation as he comes face to face with the reality of all the time he’s spent away from Jamie, all the things he is not privy to, and lordy, when he says, about Jamie’s secrets, “I’ve kept them, each and every one.”, it says so much about their history together, calling all the way back to Wentworth and beyond, there’s so much to unpick there…brilliant. Also, the tension picking up throughout dinner with he and Lord John, somebody get me a hanky, I’m Sweating over here!! This plot line just got all twisted up in the game, and I’m loving it!!
*Jamie’s quiet reaction in the moment when he first sees Willie. Sam does something with his face when portraying an absolute depth of soul, I’ve never seen another actor do it. His face shifts imperceptibly, revealing layers of emotion, shades of grief, joy, incredulity, elation, and fear…Sam is truly a gifted actor, his eyes can do more acting in one scene than most actors do in a whole show. His eyes and Cait’s chin could have their own show!
*Finally, this is where my 2nd Kilt Rating segment comes in, and Blake, Mary, Dinna bother tryin tae stop me, it’s A THOUSAND KILTS FOR A THOUSAND KISSES, OMG, the THISTLE RING, made by MURTAGH, from Jamie’s MOTHER’S silver, and inscribed with words from the poem by Catullus, “Da Mi Basia Mille” OOOHHH!!!!! BE STILL MY HEART!!! I’m undone!!! That’s it for me, I gotta quit there, I’m dabbing the tears, and all I can say is this scene exploded my heart all over the walls, and this episode rocked my socks!!!???

Wooden tub….splinter in the butt vs soft towel. Loved the episode, but did not care for the Cherokee segment. Just did not feel right. Sam’s emotions were wonderful and the RING. Finally. The toe point made me laugh, as well. Just wish they would tidy up the wigs. Whomever is doing Murtaugh’s should be doing them all. Great to listen to you. Really look forward to it every week.

They do use leeches now days in certain instances.

LJG left Willie to give Jamie a heads up that Willie was with him. He didn’t want to shock Jamie and Willie catch

Why the sheet in the tub? Because they were metal or made of wood and you’d have a cold bum or one with splinters in it. I suppose you could also wrap it around you if a stranger showed up in the room you were bathing in.

The script has Jamie saying Farewell in Gaelic. Slan leat.

Loved this episode. I can’t stop watching it. 4.8 kilt episode, and it gave me all of the feels.

It is the relationship episode, I’ve been craving.

My good bordering on great was Lord John. Oh how much did I love the John Grey/Claire scenes. Both of them were acting their hearts out, and I can’t help but feel sorry for Lord John.

Out of the many, many, many people who lust after Jamie (and the list is so long, it would be easier to mention those who don’t lust after the Lord of Lallybrock at this point)

Of all of them, I feel Lord John is the one that really conveys the heartbreak of unrequited love. There’s truly an affection there, and a friendship between the two men, so it does make you feel for him.

There he was being taken care of by Claire, and there was so much underlying tension/subtext between them it was amazing. Lord John was vulnerable, while Claire was obligated by her doctor’s oath to take care of him, and both of them were saying the same thing: that they were in love with Jamie.

If I had to pick a bad of the episode, it would be in the dialogue: A lot of times writers will break the golden rule of “show don’t tell” by over explaining.
I felt the lines between the Lord John/Claire scene of “I was born this way,” just undermined the whole scene (and it reminded me of the Lady Gaga song)

The writers could have just let the emotions they built before the lines in that scene marinate. I thought it would have been much better if they let the emotion hang in the air.

John and Claire were going to have the newly discovered understanding and connection between them regardless.

I feel that the “I was born this way,” line insulted the viewer, making us feel that we were too stupid to figure out what the unsaid, underlying message was without their assistance.

I loved the single tear in David Berry’s eye though.

For myself I hate when writers do that, and often the unspoken is more powerful than the spoken sometimes.

Anyway my GREAT was when the lovely moment when Willie and Jamie were looking at the view: “Have you ever seen anything more glorious?” While Jamie was looking at Willie. Again the unspoken message: Nothing more had to be said

Perfect!

Also, Willie is my great. Where exactly did they find that kid? He really could have been Sam’s.

Wow, he was just amazing: Haughty and spoiled like Geneva, and so very British like Lord John.

But Willie is Jamie, through and through. I cried right along with him when he cried over Lord John possibly dying, felt my heart break when he reminisced with Jamie over the last time he saw him, just melted when he courageously faced the Cherokee telling them, “I alone stole the fish! Whether or not he believed that Jamie was his father, the boy took his punishment, so Jamie would not have to.

Oh, I am tearing up all over again. So sweet.

I loved that hug that Willie gave Lord John when he discovered that Lord John was recovered: Both of their hearts were bursting, and so relieved. In Willie’s eyes, Lord John is his father.

Loved, loved, loved seeing Willie looking back to Jamie as he rode away.

I’ve got the chills thinking about it.

What a romantic bath at the end with Jamie and Claire-a thousand kisses. Oh my! (although I now have A Thousand Years in my head)

I hated the trailers at the end! I wish they’d stop doing that. Perhaps they could chop them so they are just a teaser, making the viewer want more, without giving everything away.

I have to give this episode a 5. Probably because I’m not particularly a Willie fan, and this episode made me a Willie fan. Some changes were made from the book and they worked. I didn’t even miss the privy scene. And the conversation between John Gray and Claire was fantastic. One of my favorite Outlander episodes in the entire series.

I disagree with you, Blake! I LOVED the parts with Willie and Jamie. Their interactions were perfect. It was so good to see Jamie in this way… So beautiful. Sam’s better acting. He does a good job in general, but it was nice to see Jamie be a dad to a kid who is ACTUALLY his. (: When Willie turns to look back at Jamie to let him know he WILL see him again was…When Jamie saves Willie, and admits Willie is his son, and then Willie saves HIM ??…Jamie seeing his son kill the dear..Even their interaction while walking to the bathroom was ?????. OMG. Loved it all.

I’m not sure how much I liked everything about LJG and Claire’s stuff…I definitely feel for John Gray though. I wished I was in their heads because it was intense. ha ha ?

Mary, I didn’t even think of that!! ha ha For Jamie to say something like that to Murtagh. ??? Too funny. Murtagh is so sweet and awesome. He really HAS kept all of Jamie, and Claire’s, secrets. True friend. Wow.

I didn’t particularly like the dinner time chat. I thought Murtagh was being a bit much..The scene almost felt forced/random too in a way…Loved when Willie said that about the rat to Murtagh. HA HA LJG’s reaction to Willie was hysterical. ???

YES!! I LOVE WHEN THE CLIPS IN THE TITLE SEQUENCE SHOW UP ON THE SHOW!! I look for it actually. ha ha

I give it a 4.5 kilts rating. LOVED IT. (:
