Also, I do love Poldark and Aidan Turner. But in the series, the Ross & Demelza relationship gives me angst. (That damn Elizabeth.) Jamie and Claire, however, give me non-angst? Laigh – screw it – Leghair will never have Jamie's heart. As we know.
My verdict is that Sam Heughan and Aidan Turner are equally hot. Gotta love those Celtic lads.
I'm enjoying watching Poldark's second season. I watched the first season last year. I am in the process now of listening to the first Poldark audiobook. That being said, as good a story as Poldark is, and as nice looking and seemingly nice in real life Aiden is, no one and nothing tops Jamie Fraser and Sam's embodiment of Jamie. I've invested almost 15 years loving Outlander and Jamie and Claire and Ross and Demelza will never come close to replacing them as first in my heart. My only other long term love couple is Darcy and Elizabeth who I have loved since I was 18 years old. #1 and #2 forever.
That's what Anne always tries to beat into Denise… but alas, the one-hand clause continues.
So true. His heart will never belong to another… and I love that you didn't bring up Frank as the other side of this scenario.
The Poldarks are just too new for me to love them as much, but isn't it fun that we have so many period love stories to pick from!
I got into Poldark during the first Draughtlander. I had seen the 1970's series decades ago and thought I would give this new adaptation a whirl and I was sucked right in, read all 12 books like a hungry woman at a free buffet, then watched the first season over and over and I am now watching and rewatching Season 2. Thank you gods of the universe for bringing us Poldark during Draughtlander to see us through. Aiden is the embodiment of Ross. Just as I imagined him. The Poldark series is also a very faithful adaptation with a single writer which gives us more consistency and continuity; on a limited budget they have done an extraordinary job of bringing those books to the screen. Great casting, directing and production value. Love Demelza. Ross doesn't deserve her. Elizabeth annoys me, Francis was a pitiful excuse for a man but ultimately redeems himself and George is morally corrupt. Jamie and Claire can't be beat for a love and devotion that is never in question. They don't look at other men or women, they don't commit adultery (as Ross does) and they respect each other as equals. So I have to rate Outlander as #1 with Poldark a close #2.
Oh my guess I am cheating on both of these two men EXCEPT they are my stars for a book series I love, no TV show yet but Aidan as Pirate Captain Nathanael Blackthorne and Sam as Captain Thomas, Blackthorne's BF in The Pirate Captain, Chronicles of a Legend by Kerry Lynne, a gal can dream can't she, https://www.facebook.com/piratecaptain.net/
Gulp — Ross commits adultery? Yikes. Oh, Ross — you are a complicated man and delicious to look at but if that's true you are NO Jamie Fraser!
Jamie and Claire hands down. I've read all the Outlander books, none of the Poldark series. Jamie has eyes only for Claire, Ross hasn't made up his mind. Jamie and Claire are equal partners, Ross and Demelza aren't equals in the series. Sam and Cat are sexy as hell together outside of the series, Adain and Heida don't burn up the scenes around them in real life. I'm sure there's more to say. Oh, yes! Jamie and Claire!!!!!
Tres amusant, but I don't see this as a "versus" thing. My literary/film/musical/food/sports tastes range all over the map, so I don't pit them against each other. I just enjoy.
I haven't read the Poldark novels, but sought the show out last summer after falling for Turner in "The Hobbit." (I've also watched the first season of "Being Human," which is great.) I love him in the series but I think I'm enjoying Poldark even more as a history geek. The rise of people like George and the living conditions of French Revolution-era Britain are fascinating. It was, as the curse goes, an interesting time.
I always thought of the one-hand as keeping it down rather than covering up!
Love the comparisons but for me it's Jamie and Claire all the way!
Team Jamie and Claire and Outlander all the way. Poldark does nothing for me whatsoever. Sorry
Nice blogg post???? but, sorry Poldark, Jamie (and Claire) wins every category. Nay contest. The story, looks, marriage, scenery…..Poldark is just endless financial problems????

I had never heard of Poldark until about a week ago when my aunt asked me if I watched it. I didn't really think about it much until I saw this comparison. I'll be spending the rest of my weekend binge watching Poldark now! Thank you for giving me a very good excuse to put off yard work!!
Well I'm with everyone else, I found Poldark during this terrible #Droughtlander!! Hands down Jamie/Sam is my guy! I love me some Aiden nd he does a great job with the character of Ross but the storyline of him and Demelza and Elizabeth frustrates me sometimes. Episode 3 of season just aired last week here and I wanted to knock him over the head if he did what I thought he was going to do….I know it's coming from spoilers grrr. But like everyone has said Jamie and Claire have it going on, no cheating either the exception of rape or lying with the king to save each other and SOOOO looking for to season 3 and the reunion!! I mean hello being apart for 20 years and back together I love it…..Voyager is my fave book!!
From a fan's point of view, I love both shows. It's apples and oranges to me. Although, I have fancied Jamie Fraser long before he appeared on STARZ. Loving Poldark, too. From an actors point of view I love the richness of the costuming, and the depth of performance from the actors. This old theatre gypsy just loves a good love story, y'all!
The onscreen chemistry between Claire and Jamie just about burns up my large screen TV. Ross and Demelza, not so much. Ross is still a wee bit reserved with his true feelings, something Jamie wouldn't do.
Ha! A mountain stream in a Scottish Winter – and several takes later – would definitely have more effect than Porthgwarra Cove in the height of summer…poor Sam!
Devil's advocate, ladies. I have shared more than one picture proving the hand theory as wrong!
Agree that the Poldarks are too new. But 100% that Sam IS Jamie! Jamie is the ultimate in well…..just about everything.
We started it off as more of a "would you rather" kind of thing. It transpired into what you have read! We had a great time pulling it together. Glad you read and hope you enjoyed!!
Kathy, what a nice compliment – thank you! The Outlander books and TV show are far more in depth for me than Poldark, creating a fully immersive fan experience (and obsession). But I do love the temporary distraction of Poldark!
The struggles are real for those Poldarks, aren't they? But they make a nice distraction while the Frasers are on holiday from my TV. 🙂
Jessica – it's my favorite book too! Thank you for reading and for sharing your comments. So appreciated!
I've taken to calling Poldark "Outlander Lite". Your comment tells me that might be accurate.
Having just discovered Outlander just prior to the release of the TV show, I have read and re-read the entire series several times, and re-watch the episodes repeatedly and can't get enough. Anxiously awaiting "Bees"…enjoying Poldark as a diversion during Droughtlander, but definitely team Jamie and Claire. In all of my 63 years of reading and watching TV, The Wedding episode remains my all-time favorite "go-to" whenever I need a pick me up or a bit of romance in my single life. I have never seen a depiction of a wedding night portrayed as intimately, sensuously or accurately as this episode was done…it was sexual but tactful. Can't recommend Outlander enough to everyone I know. Ross and Demelza remain to be seen…
OMG, I can't believe I found this blog! I'm obsessed with Poldark and am also an Outlander Lover! I found Poldark by accident recently and it has captured my attention more than I'd like to admit.
Thanks for this post!
I love both shows, but Outlander wins for all but one aspect that is so much better in Poldark.
Now I've read the outlander books, but I'm a TV only Poldark viewer.

Apparently in the Poldark book there is an rape scene that the TV producers decided to change to a not rape scene.
How great is that!!!
Think how many chances the Outlander TV show can improve on the books by stopping the rape after rape.
My big hope is that in the Outlander TV show get rid of the rape of G (I think a few lines are unnecessary for the plot and make the scene so disgusting and I am still angry about it)
Please Outlander TV writers take note!! Cut out the sexual violence wherever possible. It makes Poldark so good.
I think you've hit the nail squarely on the head here! It's a diversion, because let's be clear – if they were airing at the same time, you know which one we'd watch first and which one we'd save for another day. The pacing on Poldark is so fast that it's hard to even try and invest to the level in which we fiercely commit ourselves to the Frasers. But like you, I welcome the entertainment during the LONG gap between Outlander seasons!
OMG, I love that you found this blog! Because reading your comment made me think I was reading my own thoughts. 🙂 Welcome – you're in good company here. We love both too!
Your lips (or fingers, for typing) to Ron D. Moore's ears – I'd unequivocally welcome some creative deviations from all the rape in Outlander. YES PLEASE. While most of Poldark has me going, "you all should take a look at what Outlander is doing…", this one has me saying "Hey Outlander, let's 86 the rape please. Take a note from Poldark!" Thank you for commenting!
Poldark has nowhere near the creative direction, budget, scope or depth that Outlander has. Poldark is just a typical period soap, rather boring and with a limited cast of characters and costumes; it has gorgeous scenery but it is incredibly repetitive, we see the same cliff-side a thousand times every episode. Poldark/Demelza are good-looking but lead a pretty miserable life together, all-told. Ross is a cold fish and unsure of whether he loves his wife or another woman. They are definitely not Jamie and Claire. Poldark undoubtedly wishes it was Outlander, but it's just not.
Vale – I must tell you, I wholeheartedly agree. I keep saying that Poldark is Outlander Lite. And nowhere is that more apparent to me than now, in the midst of S2. It just doesn't compare. That being said, I'm so glad to have SOMETHING in the way of a historical drama to keep me company until Outlander comes back!
Gulp — Ross commits adultery? Yikes. Oh, Ross — you are a complicated man and delicious to look at but if that's true you are NO Jamie Fraser!
I'm sorry, but isn't Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser guilty of adultery?
Enjoy both series!!! Then there is a new book series out that will sizzle the waters of the Caribbean in 1753 and all of those characters could have been a part of Poldark and Outlander something to read while the TV has gone blank try it you will enjoy, The Pirate Captain, Chronicles of a Legend by Kerry Lynne (Amazon) http://www.piratecaptain.net
I think it was one hand cuz he was just holding things at bay. C'mon, this is Jamie. I'm pretty confident that cold or not he'd get my wheel turning.
OMG. I am so with you on this dilemma LOL. But I have to add another one into the mix. I can't get enough of Jamie or Ross but I have to admit and king size crush on Black Jack Randall. Not that I like bad men, but Tobias plays him so well that come on ladies, you have to Love to Hate him. ????
I mean, she might get a "get out of jail free" card based on a tiny technicality that she points out in Ep. 2… Is your husband not alive? "No, he's not alive." …. yet.
Sooo, maybe your crush is on Tobias? I have a crush on him for his performances and his quirky interview personality.

These are 2 of my favorite shows. I love both men – a lot! Ha! I actually watched Poldark first, starting about a year ago, when I was trying to find something to fill my time when my favorite, Game of Thrones (and my first love, Jon Snow) wasn’t on. Then when I caught up on Poldark and was looking for another show. Just a few weeks ago, I finally took my bff’s advice and started watching Outlander. And how can you not love Jamie?! Although, Ross Poldark is probably more my type (dark hair and eyes, like Jon Snow, see the pattern?) – I’d have to give my vote to Jamie. He’s just more romantic and somehow sexier. Plus, Ross did something that made me more angry than I’ve ever been at a character I loved (spoiler: you know, the “incident” with Elizabeth). UGH. Maybe Jamie still has it coming. lol
Re the hands, keep in mind Jamie was hiding from redcoats, then covering himself in front of his sister, who threatened to make him listen by grabbing him by the bollocks as she did when he was a child! Plus, Ross forced (ie raped) Elizabeth. Jamie would never treat a lassie in such a manner.
I agree with everything you’ve said, but if making a choice between the actors, I’d take Aidan Turner over Sam Heughan any day. Not just the dark looks, but the sense of humor. All you have to do is watch Aidan in interviews to see the sincerity that oozes out of him. I always feel like Sam is trying too hard and his smile never seems genuine. I know I’ll get plenty of arguments, but you can’t dight it ladies!?
I love Outlander, but I think I like Poldark more. A friend told me to watch Outlander as it represents the type of romance every woman dreams of having- the love of the wildest dreams. I prefer Poldark as it is more realistic- I think Ross and Demelza end up having a great relationship overall, with many ups and downs but with great communication and true to themselves and their relationship. YES, I absolutely HATED the scene with Elizabeth (I was depressed for days LOL), I could not believe he did that…but Poldark is very realistic to me, and they make their relationship work. Their love is enduring and true. They make mistakes, have periods of breakage, but in the end they realize how lucky they are to have one another. Outlander is idealism. It is fun and amazing to watch and get away from the real life, but common, what man behaves like Jamie does with Claire??? Usually the very passionate men have eyes for more than one woman, and those less passionate are just not like Jamie. They might only love one woman, but not as Jamie does Claire…Claire and Jamie have amazing chemistry in the movie and out and they are lovely to watch, but I actually really hate the violence from Outlander, sexual and non-sexual violence- I wish they took it out. So at this point, Poldark wins for me. I have actually listened to all 12 audiobooks and I hate that they made the characters in the movie look different from the same characters in the books. For instance, Demelza is dark in the books (black hair and dark eyes), Caroline had red-auburn hair, Elizabeth is fair, Ross has gray-blue eyes- as Francis does …o the books are amazing!!!
