What is history? Professor Brown’s (College-level History Major) lecture was not on the actual history (which his students already know) but on the Theory of history as told through the the eyes of the victors/survivors. As Bree said to Roger, “history depends on who’s telling the story” (paraphrase). That is the basis for what has become Bree’s full-out identity crisis. To her, her own personal history was based on lies that were told by other people. That’s why she is failing in her classes, she no longer believes in history as a truth. That is why she has become absorbed in architecture/engineering – there is an immutable truth there. That’s why she was struggling to see herself in Frank and Jamie and Claire. And that’s why, in the end, it is not so difficult for her to let Claire go. She is at the crossroads of her own journey of finding who SHE is in the absence of those who “made” her. For that journey, she doesn’t need her mother – she needs Roger, who is her future – and that deep breath to steel herself before putting on the Santa hat and walking out to begin her new life, new traditions, is her first step on that journey.

I thought the Sandy-Candy scene was crucial for both Claire and Bree. Lani, I love your image of Claire getting slapped in the face with a fish! A perfect way to put it. What Sandy said was true – her truth- from her perspective. I totally go it and Yes, I felt her pain. Claire heard the message she needed to hear. And that encounter led to a very important convo between Claire and Bree. Bree saw and heard things throughout her life that were confusing and upsetting. Just as any child of estranged parents experiences she is struggling with guilt. That convo gave her an adult perspective of her parents and allowed her to separate her own identity from them.

LOVED the ending. Ending on the sign or the bell would have been every bit as much of a cliffhanger but with far less satisfaction. Ending on that lighter note while retaining the suspension was a perfect way to get us through the break. I too enjoyed how they allowed to enter the moment with Claire. I found myself swallowing with Cat before she spoke because my throat was also dry. Although I chuckled when Jamie fainted (I knew it was coming) I just about died laughing at the facial response to the faint that Cat gave us!

Easter Egg from the Script: that episode of Dark Shadows, which was filmed on that day in time just happened to be about a woman going back in time to be with the man she loved :I love serendipity 🙂

Great podcast guys as always!
Really loving Roger, especially Roger and Bree’s looks to each other, they are shaping up to be a great team, especially our “cinnamon roll Roger” with his jokes and shellfish breath he adds the comic element!
I did prefer Claire using the puddle link to the books, and avoiding going back to the stones, we have so much book (this season should have been 16 episodes like book one, IMO, so much happens, and it’s the BEST book) (I would have settled for about 5 episodes on DIA (NOT a fav) but then, that’s me – and had the extra on Voyager.

Everyone has very high expectations for 3:06 and I am sure the writing team are well aware of the importance of getting it right, and will do an amazing job, as always, CAN NOT WAIT!

This comment is based on the podcast with your outlandish Theory regarding the bones that Claire was talking about with Joe. I have read the first seven books and I will not give any spoilers away but the bones comes in to play later. In the third installment which is the book that the season is based on, Joe does show the bones to Claire right before she returns to school, And so it was necessary for them to put that into the episode before she goes back.

Speaking of ‘Downton Abbey,” I just heard that one of their past cast member is now the newest cast member of “Outlander” starting next season. Ed Speleers who played a footman there for two seasons.
