Just wanted to comment on the coincidences you brought up in the podcast.

In regards to the mirror, at first I gave little thought to Claire’s grabbing the mirror, but shortly after, when it became clear that Father Fogden was reluctant to let Claire go and she was getting ready to bolt without him, I thought she was picking up tools that she might need to go it alone across the island, such as something to start a fire with for food or warmth, or to signal with as she did. Then, it became less “coincidental” and more a part of her planning.

As for the Artemis ending up stranded in the shoals of the same island Claire was on, remember the Porpoise and the Artemis were following the same route, albeit one more swiftly than the other. So, it didn’t surprise me that they would both go past that same island. Clearly, because the Artemis got tossed about in a storm, they ended up on another side of the island (in the shoals) — or at least closer to Father Fogden’s encampment then Claire had by just floating in the water. So, to my mind, it wasn’t so much a matter of coincidence then that they were on the same trajectory

Routes through the Caribbean were pretty well established and mostly based on currents and trade winds. So it’s pretty logical that the Porpoise and the Artemis were on the same route to Jamaica.

If you go to look on a map of the Caribbean like this one (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piracy_in_the_Caribbean#/media/File:CIA_map_Central_America_%26_Caribbean.png) you’ll notice that from Grand Turk (where Claire jumped ship) to Jamaica, the next island any ship on that sailing route is Hispanola (where Haiti (formerly called ‘Santa Domingo’) and the Dominican Republic are located. Fogden’s compound was just west of Cap-Haiten — on the western edge of ‘Haiti’ — where the passage between Hispanola and Cuba exists.

Yep, so geography was a thing even in the 18th century.

Excellent comments from Sassycatz and Kathy Oeffinger.

The Porpoise and the Artemis were on the same route to Jamaica. When Claire jumped from the Porpoise, Annekja told her the currents would take her to that island in the Grand Turks, but evidently, there were some gails that carried her further to Hispaniola. Meanwhile the Artemis while trying to navigate between islands lost its main sail and the currents carried them to the same island. This makes complete sense. Many days went by. Claire had floated at least for one day as she jumped at night and washed up in daylight. It is likely that the Artemis landed on the other side of the island fairly close to the time Claire did. It took 3 days and 2 nights for Claire to get to Father Fogden’s, then she was there for a few days. When we see the Artemis, they have been there for days and are just finishing up the repairs. Regarding Claire taking the mirror, she is a survivalist. She picked up those stones and some kindling because she knew she could use those items to build a fire. Having a mirror is also part of a survivalist’s toolkit, not only for signaling but it can be used to focus and augment light. Lastly, real ants were used but they were enhanced with CGI. I could not have dealt with the ants. The snake is fine, but insects are creepy.

Oh, my, Gosh!!! This episode was great!! I loved it, I have so much to say, but first of all, Blake, little buddy, I told you!! Coincidence upon coincidence, just get used to it. I think that taking the view that there is a hefty intervention of Fate is the best way to get through this story…no spoilers, but I’m currently reading the 8th book, and yeah, it’s AMAZING, but the Coincidence factor is crazy…just Let It Go…on to the GBG!!!
The Good
Where do I start? I actually had to write down all my points, because I knew I would forget something if I didn’t, there was so much good.
Father Fogden was portrayed quite well, I liked the actor, and his interpretation. He was genial, a bit nutty(ha), and just the right amount of over the top. I like him better here in the show than in the books, he felt like a lonesome loony who smokes the yupa too much, and doesn’t get out enough. More Good was Mamacita! Watching the pain and sadness wash across her face as Father talked about her darling Ermenegilda was heartbreaking…I felt for her, and started to get a bit weepy myself…losing a child is something you never get over, and I think Claire felt for her as well.
Also good, was the Goats!!! I wanted them all, I’m an animal nut, and miss my goats so much!! Gimme those cuties!!!
The Bad
Not a whole lot to say here, other than Claire, EAT THAT SNAKE!!! IT WOULD FEED YOU FOR DAYS!!! I got so frustrated with that, come on, I’d eat that snake. I love snakes as pets, but if I’m starving on an island, Imma eat All The Snakes…also, you used your bum roll to start the fire the first night, but then tossed THE REST OF IT ON THE FIRE!!! Why?? You need to start a fire again tomorrow, and that’s your best source of tinder!! Oh well. She must be delirious from not eating enough woodland critters.
The Great
The Wedding!! Marsali, you sassypants!! I loved how she kept Father on track, and also her pre wedding chat with Claire. She’s finally starting to form her own opinions, not just parroting her mother’s vitriol. Marsali is such a great character, I love her 🙂
Yi Tien Cho and his handy Chicken in a Box!! He is so wonderfully diplomatic, and I just adore him. I also want that chicken, but I know Father will take good care of it.
Jamie Naming Fergus!!!! My heart was fit to burst when Jamie speaks up for him, and oh lordy, the looks they share as he is affirmed and validated as Jamie’s son, priceless…it hit me right in the mommy bone? In all honesty, last weeks’ drama between them makes this scene all the more meaningful. They were on such shaky ground while Jamie was all emo crazy, but this made the character arcs work. This show has a way of leaving things hanging one week, but then bringing those loose ends together the next, and I’m finding the rhythm, and I’m getting my groove with it. Binge watching helps pull the strings of story together, for sure.
Another quick Great was Fergus saying, “Je t’aime, ma femme” as he kisses Marsali…it means “I Love You, My Wife”, OOOOHHH, THE FEELS!!!
More Great, Turtle Soup of course!! All cherries aside, this was a great scene between people who not only love each other, but can Play and be Friends, even within intimacy, which is so important in a marriage. They have such a beautiful way of interacting, it shows you how truly close they are, and I dig it!!
Can’t wait for next week, y’all are awesome, don’t worry about snarky reviews, for every one of them, there are 500 of us who just haven’t had a chance to post a review(I need to ask my hubby for help, but I’m gonna leave one, don’t you worry…I’m just a techno dork). Hugs and Blankies, Dorcas and Bubbies, and Rumpy Pumpy all around?

When Jamie gave Fergus the Fraser name you could see the pride in Jamie’s eyes and joy in Fergus’. Such a great scene.

It was mainly the shoals that got the boat, but the gales finished it off. Which didn’t make sense since shoals would have ripped the bottom of the boat apart. They screwed up on this one.

Claire became a klepto when she stole the penicillin from the Boston hospital.

Ants – some real, some CGI. Fake legs.

If we don’t get some payoff for Mamacita seeing the zipper it was a totally wasted bit.

Coco was Wilson’s ancestor. haha

Arabella

More importantly how many Chinese people would Mamacita and Father Fogden have seen to know it was a Chinaman who ate Arabella?

It was a nice bit at the end of the wedding when Father Fogden blessed Jamie and Claire too.

Other posters have already debunked the coincidences in this episodes. Just to add, Santa Domingo (Hispaniola) is a HUGE island (29.418 square miles in area), the second largest island in the Caribbean, second only to Cuba (Jamaica is only 4,240 square miles). Both were on course for Jamaica and you can’t get there without running head-on into Santa Domingo. It would have been stranger if Jamie and Claire had NOT both landed there. Having said that, coincidences do indeed abound in the book series and as Kendra and others have mentioned there is a Fate/Destiny-driven feel to the entire story.

I found what Claire experienced after washing up in the book fascinating but it would have been impossible to film for the show. There was indeed a storm that effected Claire, the Artemis, AND the Porpoise’s trajectories but there simply was not enough time to cover all of that. We would have needed an extra episode. There’s a lot that will have to be cut out of these chapters in order to make it to the end of the story in two episodes. So I was fine with the show’s alternative. I think it showed Claire’s resourcefulness without making her look like McGyver. Her pocketing the mirror was simply more evidence of her resourcefulness. I certainly didn’t see it as random kleptomania!

I think the show did a marvelous job of not only distilling a huge amount of material into its essence, but it also took advantage of all of the wonderful characters and relationships that exist internally within the show’s unique story line. A good example of that was Yi Tien Cho’s scene with Father Fogden and his contribution to the Turtle Soup scene.

There was so much Good and Great in this episode for me! Father Fogden/Mamacita, the ongoing development of Claire and Marsali’s relationship, Fergus and Marsali’s wedding and Jamie giving Fergus his name, and of course the Turtle Soup scene – so fun and endearing. I beat my head up against the wall to find something BAD and the only thing I came up with, as mentioned by other posters, was that I was frustrated that Claire threw her whole bumroll onto the fire when she should have saved it for later use. That’s why I gave this episode a 5 kilt rating. I predict the next two episodes are gonna have our heads spinning!

I give this wonderful episode 3 warps short of 5 kilts. I absolutely needed Claire’s 12 minutes by her lonesome to set the mood for this high temperature segway on her path back to Jaime. I agree with Blake this opening was so well done on every level, I just knew Claire had sand & salt where the sun don’t shine, her skin was crispy and well those ants didn’t help at all. Was the snake visit some garden of Eden reference, a sign that Claire she had soup and seduction in her near future??
My Great – definitely the Wedding and Jaime declaring Fergus as his son. Father Fogden seemed to be channeling both John Cleese and Rowan Atkinson ( Four Weddings & a Funeral) and our little minx Marsali with her step on it, I wan’t to ken what’s in those britches more than you do bub, a sassy, blushing bride indeed!
My bad – is definitely the dopey dialogue on the beach between Jaime & Fergus, perhaps the writers giving us a chance to recover from the sight of Arabella’s dermabrasion gone bad? Happily Jaime’s peek a boo pecs starin’ at me behind that perfectly dingy pirate shirt saved that scene for me.
My really, really Good was our King of Men, confronted or backed? 😉 by a sherry infused she-devil wife, does his darndest to douse Claire’s inner fire, the penicillin can’t touch. Best line for me was Jaime telling Willoughby ‘ I thank ye’ in mid rrr*mpy-p*mpy on the other side of the door.
ps. Blake I know you don’t read the scripts- I think you may have mis- heard Jaime’s observation about Claire’s nips – I heard: ‘yer nipples starin’ me are full of sherry’ … see what I did there??

Good morning Casters
Is no one aware of the Australian bush used in Claire’s wandering scene? I was amazed to see eucalyptus leaves and branches used to build a fire!!!
So sorry to see Aussie bush used as vegetation for a Caribbean island. Did no one see this?
This spoiled my episode. Yes Aussies watch Outlander. Get it right STARZ.

  Yes, I noticed the improper vegetation, as well. Because they filmed in South Africa, they couldn’t really get ANY of the vegetation truly right, as there were no Mangroves, which play a big part in this section of the book. Also, if you ever watch Black Sails, you’ll basically feel like Claire has simply landed on Teach’s Beach…I kept looking for his tent…so, basically what I’m saying is, ya kinda gotta whistle past some things that can’t be helped due to budget/filming constraints…but yeah, the eucalyptus was super out of place.
  Also, I forgot to rate this episode: 4.8 Kilts 🙂

I loved this episode— everything about it! I give it 5 kilts!

Good- the humor of the episode. From Claire and Coco to Leslie and Hayes (sorry Mary!) and Marsali’s one liners at the wedding. We don’t get a lot of laughter in all the drama and mad car chases around here but I’ll take it. I’ll take it all, thank you very much.

Bad- ok does Claire speak Spanish? I don’t think so according to the books, but I think so according to the show and Claire’s reactions and the previous dealings with subtitling? I was pretty distracted. Did they speak much Spanish in the 50s and 60s Boston?

Great- the wedding and Fergus’s name change. I like that though Marsali was Jamie’s step daughter, and Fergus his adopted son, both became Frasers that day. Cesar played it beautifully.
