Hi Mary and Blake:
You guys are knocking me out with these awesome podcasts.
I have to say, I really liked the creepiness of this episode.
I foresee trouble everwhere: It is never good when someone just grabs a paper without reading it, and neither Claire nor Furgus read the paper that he took from Claire’s desk. I am wondering if it has something to do with the obituary that Frank found telling of Jamie and Claire’s death?
Just like I foresee trouble with Bree Jemmy, (and Lizzie?) being alone on Frasier’s Ridge with
Bonnet on the loose. (Who thought that was a good idea, anyway?) Bonnett’s on his way since Bree told him absolutely EVERTHING last season.
But Free Will was all about the closeness between Jamie and Claire with some laughs thrown in.
THANK GOD it did not turn out to be another “Creme De Minthe” episode where Claire argued with Jamie about saving a life. That became old the first time she did it (and the second)
I was thinking that this could make a perfect Halloween episode. I giggled early on with Marsali’s learning about the mold. It was so cute to see Claire as teacher and Marsali as the student. (Did you ever see Murder in Texas by the way? A character who was a doctor killed his wife by growing cultures in the fridge and poisoned her that way. WATCH OUT BONNET.)
In many ways, I think Marsali is much more of an assertive, proactive character than Bree is. Many times, I feel like the show is trying to hard to make us like Bree.
The closeness and risque banter was so cute between Jamie and Claire.
I loved the fact that Claire mentioned Frank to Bree. He was a part of her life too, and I’m glad she
didn’t just develop an attitude of “out of sight out of mind.” (I am reading the book Outlander now, and this is one of the things that annoys me about book Claire)
Fanny had me in stitches in a morbid way. She so reminded me of Kathy Bates in Misery, it was great!
She took so long with those damned papers, I thought she was going to knock out Claire and Jamie to kidnap or kill them.
She was so gleeful about torturing Beardsley.
When she saw her baby, she was so relieved, and when she shouted: “you hear that you old bastard, she isn’t yours!” I almost died laughing. Fanny was so gleeful.
Kudos on the makeup job on Mr. Beardsley
I loved that scene at the end when Claire and the baby were outside seeing the swarm of birds flying when the gunshot rang out when Jamie killed Beardsley.
It was worthy of Alfred Hitchcock.
Great to think it was the souls of Beardsley’s wives being set free. Remember in The Devil’s Mark when Claire tells Gellis that the birds she sees fly in flocks to protect one another? It might be the same in this episode.
Finally, I loved seeing Roger take charge a little bit. He seemed to be trying to get self-esteem back in this episode, although making promises is never good if you can’t control them. But Roger could surprise everyone and I hope he does. I see him as definitely more mature than Bree, and remember, Bonnett, underestimated Roger last season.
Roger needs to get out of his funk
I’m surprised Mary gave such a low score considering this ep is one of the few that is very close to the books, in spite of the smell affect.
Marsali was practicing on a pig.
BTW did you notice Fergus grabbed a quill but no ink to write Jamie’s notice.
Funny how a rotting dead body in Claire’s house doesn’t bother her, but a live decaying body in Fanny’s house does. Just for your info the goats would pee every time they started shooting a scene in the Beardsley house, so the smell was real.
Re: The passenger pigeons. Callback to the flock of starlings? Wasn’t it in The Devil’s Mark?
